Methodology

Figures come from the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey (ACS) 5-Year estimates — the most recent available and the standard source for local housing and income data. We include incorporated places with a population of at least 150,000. "Rent burden" compares median gross rent (renter households) to median household income (all households), so it is an indicative ratio rather than a household-level measure. Full per-city data and sources are on each city page.
